BYD Reports First Profit Decline Since 2021

Chinese automaker BYD has reported its first annual profit decline since 2021, even as revenue and sales reached record highs.

For 2025, net profit fell by 19% to 32.6 billion yuan (about $4.7 billion). At the same time, revenue rose to a record 804 billion yuan (approximately $116 billion), surpassing Tesla.

Meanwhile, BYD strengthened its position in the global EV market and became the largest producer of fully electric vehicles. The company delivered 2.26 million EVs, compared to Tesla’s 1.64 million, taking first place in total sales volume.

The main reason for the profit decline was intensifying price competition within China. Chairman Wang Chuanfu described the domestic market as a “brutal knockout,” where manufacturers are forced to cut prices to maintain market share.

Amid this pressure, BYD is focusing on expanding into international markets. In 2026, the company plans to sell around 1.3 million vehicles overseas, hoping to offset weakening demand at home.

As a result, despite record sales and rising revenue, the world’s largest EV manufacturer is facing profit pressure due to a price war in its most important market.
